Where the data lives and what leaves
CFO Foundry runs on the company's own computers, from its own files. This page sets out what stays there, what goes online and when, and who is responsible for which data.
Files in, reports out, on your machines
CFO Foundry is a desktop application with no server and no database. It reads the exports in a company's data room and writes self-contained HTML reports and Excel workbooks.
Each company is one folder, the mandate: its data room, its configuration and its reports, side by side. The folder sits on the computer that runs CFO Foundry or on a network share inside the company. The installation is a separate folder that holds no client data, so an update replaces it without touching the mandate.
- In: Excel exports from accounting, HR, time tracking and the CRM.
- Out: HTML reports for any current browser, and Excel workbooks.
- Self-contained: one file per report, loading nothing from the internet.
What goes online and when
Financial data never leaves the company's machines. The software goes online at four moments, and each concerns only the software or its licence.
- First start: CFO Foundry downloads its Python packages from the Python Package Index, the public library of Python software.
- Activation: a new installation is activated online once, with its activation key, at license.cfofoundry.io.
- Daily check-in: once a day, when the app is opened, the installation renews its licence at license.cfofoundry.io and learns whether a newer version exists.
- Updates: the company's IT downloads a new version from download.cfofoundry.io and installs it.
The activation and the check-in name the installation, its version and the company its licence is issued to. Neither carries financial data or file contents: no figure, no account, no document and no employee data.
If the licence server cannot be reached, the installed licence stays as it is and the reports keep building until the licence's offline grace period ends.
Sealed logins per reader
With readers set up, each report file becomes a login page. It carries one copy of the report per reader, encrypted for that reader and opened with their own password, and each copy holds only the views granted to that person. A view that is not granted is removed from the copy, with its figures.
Excel downloads can be switched off per reader. A password has at least eight characters; the app generates twenty.
The logins settle who in the company reads what. A file that is passed on can be attacked offline for as long as anyone likes, so the length of the password is the protection, and a report file deserves the care of any confidential document.
Personal data and the GDPR
The HR and hours exports hold personal data: names, salaries, joiners and leavers, hours worked. They stay in the mandate folder on the company's machines, like every other export.
The company is the controller for this data under the GDPR. It decides who sets up and reads the reports, and the logins can leave the Workforce view out of a reader's copy.
The privacy policy covers this website, its contact form and its visitor count.
Nothing uploaded, no AI training
CFO Foundry computes every figure by fixed rules on the computer it runs on. No data is uploaded to a cloud service, sent to an AI model or used to train one. There is no CFO Foundry account to sign in to.
What the licence covers
A licence is issued to one company and belongs to its mandate folder. It covers generating reports and workbooks for that company's entities, and it is verified on the computer itself, without a connection, within an offline grace period.
Reports and workbooks already generated stay usable for good, with or without a licence: they open in any browser and in Excel. An update replaces the software only; the data room, the configuration and the reports stay as they are.
System requirements
- Operating system: macOS, or Windows 10 or 11.
- Python: Python 3.14 from python.org, installed by the company's IT. CFO Foundry installs its own Python packages on the first start.
- Windows only: Microsoft WebView2, which draws the app's window. It is part of Windows 11 and of an up-to-date Windows 10.
- Internet: on the first start, for the packages and the activation; then for the daily licence check-in and for updates.
- Readers: a current browser for the reports, Excel for the workbooks.
FAQ
Does CFO Foundry upload financial data?
No. The reports are built on the company's own computers. The software goes online only for its packages, its licence and its updates, and none of that carries a figure.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Reports build without a connection, within an offline grace period. A new installation needs a connection once, to install its packages and to be activated; afterwards it checks in when it can.
Who is the controller for employee data?
The company. A fractional CFO from CFO Foundry who works with the data during an engagement does so on the company's behalf.
